STUDIO POLICY

ADULT LESSONS

  • Adults can self-book lessons at this link after initially contacting Shlomo to set up an account with “Fons” (scheduling app)

  • 48-hour cancellation policy: If you cancel your lesson 48 hours (or more) before the lesson time, you will get a refund.

RECURRING LESSONS (ages 5-18):

Prerequisites:

  • Students must have a piano to practice on regularly. A digital piano with hammer action can be a temporary compromise (semi-weighted and spring-action keyboards do not count).

  • Students (ages 5 to 18) must practice at least five times per week. Children left to their own devices may or may not practice unsupervised. Parents are expected to facilitate daily practice (especially for young students). Some apps can help with motivating students (more info below).

  • For new young students (ages 5-8), a parent should be present in the lesson (for at least the first two months of lessons).

Tuition & schedule:

  • If the school district is working, there is a lesson that day. Booking lessons on vacations is optional.

I.e. if you are enrolled for lessons on Tuesdays and the teachers at school are working that Tuesday, you will be invoiced for a lesson for that Tuesday.

  • Lesson times are booked by Shlomo at the beginning of each month and billed through Fons as a prepaid package of 4 lessons with autopay turned on (autopay will be deactivated at the end of the school year).

  • You (parent/student) are committing to having your piano lesson at the same recurring weekly time throughout the school year/semester.

  • Rates: 45$ per 45-minute lesson, 30$ per 30-minute lesson, 60$ per 60-minute lesson

  • In the event of inclement weather or sickness:

Parents/students will record the assigned homework and send me videos/theory assignments to review. If the situation allows, we can also have the lesson remotely.

  • Courtesy Rescheduling: Life happens. Sometimes you can’t make it to your lesson. You can contact me to find a different time at no additional cost. Please be mindful and sparing with these requests. If I offered a courtesy reschedule, please understand it’s an exception.

  • If I (Shlomo) need to cancel a lesson, I either refund the lesson or offer a credit for the following month.

  • Inevitably, you may have to miss a lesson due to sickness or other reasons. It is understood that you would be paying for a lesson that you had to miss. I am happy to spend your lesson time reviewing recordings of the student playing and recording instructional content for the student.

  • I don’t assume lessons will continue during the summer. I do that scheduling separately at the end of the school year.

  • There will be a student recital. Details will be announced in the future. Sometimes I charge a little fee to help cover the costs (venue rental & snacks).

  • All students eventually stop taking lessons. Ideally, unenrollment happens after the end of the school year or during the holiday break. This gives me a reasonable chance to find a student to fill the gap in my schedule and keep my finances in good standing. Additionally, with sufficient notice, we can make the last few months of piano lessons more meaningful by focusing on easier music styles and ending the chapter with a positive experience.

Materials and apps:

  • Tuition does not cover the cost of (copyrighted) sheet music. If you’d like me to be in charge of purchasing sheet music, let’s discuss a flat fee.

  • For students who love popular music and have a tablet, I recommend purchasing a subscription to sheetmusicdirect.

  • Please consult with me before buying sheet music. It’ll save you money.

  • Recommended apps: Piano Maestro, Simply Piano, Piano Marvel, Rhythm Swing, Earmaster.

Note that these apps are engineered to give the student a good feeling and can give the appearance of reading music. In my experience, reading real sheet music that doesn’t move is a different skill. These apps also don’t know if the notes are played with healthy posture.
